In the early 1980s, Breitling learned that the Italian Frecce Tricolori Jet team was on the hunt for a dedicated mechanical chronograph for its pilots. The team's ideal watch had to be sturdy enough for the cockpit, but sleek enough for off-duty wear. One of the prime occupational hazards facing jet pilots: their watch crystals often got damaged when they opened and closed the canopy of their aircraft. Breitling came up with a clever solution: recessing the crystal in the bezel and protecting it with four raised "rider tabs" at the 15-minute marks. The Frecce Tricolori was impressed with the design and commissioned the watches, that went on to become a hit, not just with the team, but amongst collectors. In 1984, Breitling launched the design publicly as the Chronomat. Its rider tabs, together with the easy-grip "onion" crown and durable metal “Rouleaux” bracelet, remain Chronomat signatures to this day.
Breitling has a strong place among luxury watchmakers without a doubt. Highly exclusive, technically advanced and largely sports chronographs are popular with customers around the world. It is also due to its close links with the world of aviation, unique design and rich history.
It dates back to the second half of the 19th century, when young Leon Breitling in the Swiss town of St-Imier opened a workshop for the production of movements. By honest approach and persistent work he defined the guiding principles of corporate culture that persist to the present. The history of the company has been and is rich in a number of firsts, patents and inventions: the first wrist chronograph, the official supplier of the British RAF, models such as Chronomat or Navitimer with a logarithmic ruler. Especially the Navitimer model with its legendary design has entered into the hearts of watchmakers, and it has also been popular with aircraft pilots around the world.
Development and progress culminated in the creation of the first IN-HOUSE caliber 01. It has a 3-day power reserve, a high-precision chronograph and a 5-year warranty. Made and assembled by 100% IN-HOUSE in the newly built Breitling Chronometry plant in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The new clockwork immediately pulled the attention of both the professional and the lay public, putting the professional 01 into the top ten world chronographs. The motto “Instruments for professionals” says it all.
